SIMON SPARES X FACTOR'S 'TERRIBLE TWINS'
TWINS John and Edward Grimes were dramatically saved from eviction off The X Factor last night after Simon Cowell threw them a lifeline in a sensational sing-off.
The 18-year-old twins – dubbed “Jedward” – and Welsh teenager Lucie Jones ended up as the bottom two acts of the ITV show.
But the invincible brothers, who have become a favourite with the public for their high-energy dance routines, found themselves an unlikely ally in judge and former fierce critic Simon Cowell.
Tearful Lucie was sent home to the audience’s disbelief, despite putting in a polished performance of One Moment In Time, which won over Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue.
Lucie’s shock exit will fuel speculation that the pop mogul actually likes the spiky-haired Irish siblings and has plans for them as stars despite earlier insisting he would leave Britain if they won.
In last night’s dramatic finale, Cowell told both acts: “I don’t think either of you can win.”
But, despite blaming the twins for some “horrific performances” he admitted: “I’d rather see the boys again. I am going to let the public decide.”
After receiving the lowest number of votes, a tearful Lucie leapt to the twins’ defence, claiming: “I’m gutted but the boys deserve to be here, they work harder than anyone.”
Lucie’s mentor Dannii held her head in her hands in despair, before taking to the stage to embrace the Cardiff student.
In a dig at the twins’ vocal abilities, Dannii said: “I just wish all the good singers good luck in the singing competition. It shouldn’t have happened.”
The X Factor website was inundated with shocked comments about the decision, saying “Simon is mad” and “Simon just wanted to keep the ratings up”.
The show also featured performances by Black Eyed Peas and former X Factor winner Leona Lewis who performed her new single Happy.
